About Us

Information:

Students will receive a computer called the Raspberry Pi. This computer was designed for kids to explore computing in a very easy way. However, it's not all that easy for somebody who has never played around much with computers or even created a program. That's why we're calling for enthusiastic kids who have little to some experience programming, to come to this summer camp this year. When they come home, your kid(s) will be able to show you a basic 2 player tank battle game, a simple text adventure game, and a spaceship game

These are all finished programs they will be able show you, but they also take home some skills in programming. These are:

A rudimentary knowledge of Scratch

A rudimentary knowledge of Python 3

A rudimentary knowledge of Turtle Graphics

We recommend that you search these things up before you register, and also potentially try code.org, and/or scratch.mit.edu. Also, this camp is geared towards kids that are 12-18 years old. We created this camp for kids who are fascinated with computers, eager to learn, and students who enroll should be able to type a minimum of 20WPM (Words per minute). You can check your WPM at monkeytype.com. Please make sure that you are getting a good nights sleep (So that your brain has plenty of energy to focus). Please Note: This Camp will not take place, if COVID restrictions do not allow!

Schedule:

This is a very basic schedule, so don't get discouraged by how simple it is. We actually put lots of effort to make a more detailed schedule for ourselves, and have also created lots of teaching material, for the students, and us. This camp starts on August 15th, ends on August 19th, and it is located in Bridgeland, Calgary at 235 8a St NE (Centre Street Church Bridgeland Campus).

So now that you know all the important information, we get to the cost. This camp costs $280.00, which includes the Raspberry Pi Computer, all the parts you need in addition to the Raspberry Pi, plus the labour. When we say labour, we don't mean that we slave over this (On the contrary, we love teaching kids about computers.), we just mean the cost of our time. We understand that this might be a bit of a commitment so we've decided to allow you to rent older hardware for $100.00, but you'd ideally get the same experience.

About Us:

With all that out of the way, let's talk about the creators of this camp. This probably isn't too important, but we still think it's important for you to know a bit of background about us. Karsten and Lincoln, are the ones that made this possible. Karsten is 15, and Lincoln is 17. I hope our ages don't make you think twice about registering, because we really love teaching other kids about programming. It all started when Karsten was in grade 1, Lincoln got his Raspberry Pi. Lincoln showed him how it worked, and how you could make games, and do all kinds of things. Karsten loved it, so when he was in grade 2, he asked for a Raspberry Pi for Christmas. Well, his wish came true! As soon as he opened it and had it up and running, he started to program, but he didn't know anything about programming, so his dad – being a software developer – helped him get started. Since then Karsten and Lincoln continue to code and play around on the Raspberry Pi. 3 years ago, Karsten wanted to start a Raspberry Pi camp so that he could teach kids the fun of coding. So he called up Lincoln, and talked about doing it together. This is our fourth year running this camp, and we hope the kids who do register, will have a very fun time. If you'd like to register, or you have some questions, please email us at picamp.calgary@gmail.com. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
